Children stories in Polish and English with audio

Learn Polish by reading children books

Here are some examples of children stories in Polish and English translation with audio. I think this is the best method to learn a new language. I used to learn Dutch in such a way, but I didn't have any audio to listen, so I was unable to learn the pronunciation. Even though, this method helped me a lot. I learned how to build sentences without thinking about grammar. I used a book in Dutch and the same book with Polish translation (which is my mother tongue). I wrote in my notebook one sentence in Dutch and the same sentence in Polish. I wrote it in two columns so that the original sentence and the translation were next to one another. I used literature, because I didn't have access to children books in Dutch. I read many times sentences that I had written and each time I read it everything became easier and easier. Here are few sample sentences from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in English and Polish. You can use them to learn Polish and I encourage you to choose a book that you like and create such a double translation for yourself.

At the bottom of this page I have also included Thumbelina, A Christmas carol, and The adventures of Sherlock Holmes in English and Polish with Polish recording in mp3 format. There are many other e-books that you can use. Probably for many e-books you will not be able to find mp3s. Instead, you can use a text-to-speech program Ivona Reader. It can read for you any text that you want. It is so far the best text-to-speech program. You can download a 30 days trial version at www.ivona.com. There is a choice between Polish, English UK and US and many other languages. New languages come every few months.

Polish-English translation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

ROZDZIAŁ I Przez króliczą norę

1. Alicja miała już dość siedzenia na ławce obok siostry i próżnowania. Raz czy dwa razy zerknęła do książki, którą czytała siostra. Niestety, w książce nie było obrazków ani rozmów. „A cóż jest warta książka - pomyślała Alicja - w której nie ma rozmów ani obrazków?”

Chapter I Down the rabbit hole

1. Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures or conversation?”

2. Alicja rozmyślała właśnie - a raczej starała się rozmyślać, ponieważ upał czynił ją bardzo senną i niemrawą - czy warto męczyć się przy zrywaniu stokrotek po to, aby uwić z nich wianek. Nagle tuż obok niej przebiegł Biały Królik o różowych ślepkach.

2. So she was considering, in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

3. Właściwie nie było w tym nic nadzwyczajnego. Alicja nie dziwiła się nawet zbytnio słysząc, jak Królik szeptał do siebie: „O rety, o rety, na pewno się spóźnię”.

3. There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural);

4. Dopiero kiedy Królik wyjął z kieszonki od kamizelki zegarek, spojrzał nań i puścił się pędem w dalszą drogę, Alicja zerwała się na równe nogi.

4. but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet,

5. Przyszło jej bowiem na myśl, że nigdy przedtem nie widziała królika w kamizelce ani królika z zegarkiem.

5. for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it,

6. Płonąc z ciekawości pobiegła na przełaj przez pole za Białym Królikiem i zdążyła jeszcze spostrzec, że zniknął w sporej norze pod żywopłotem.

6. and, burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.

7. Wczołgała się więc za nim do króliczej nory nie myśląc o tym, jak się później stamtąd wydostanie.

7. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

8. Nora była początkowo prosta niby tunel, po czym skręcała w dół tak nagle, że Alicja nie mogła już się zatrzymać i runęła w otwór przypominający wylot głębokiej studni.

8. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

9. Studnia była widać tak głęboka, czy może Alicja spadała tak wolno, że miała dość czasu, aby rozejrzeć się dokoła i zastanowić nad tym, co się dalej stanie.

9. Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her, and to wonder what was going to happen next.

10. Przede wszystkim starała się dojrzeć dno studni, ale jak to zrobić w ciemnościach?

10. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything:

11. Zauważyła jedynie, że ściany nory zapełnione były szafami i półkami na książki. Tu i ówdzie wisiały mapy i obrazki.

11. then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves: here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs.
